  • 'Meet & Greet' Session on OpenFOAM for engineering colleges across India

    Date: 29th April & 9th May 2022

The CFD-OpenFOAM team, FOSSEE, IIT Bombay, led by Prof. Janani Srree Murallidharan introduced OpenFOAM, its capabilities and advantages to faculty members, research scholars and students all over India. It was an interactive session wherein the participants cleared their doubts related to OpenFOAM and queries on collaboration with the OpenFOAM team, IIT Bombay. The team presented the opportunities and participation options for students and faculty members in the OpenFOAM project in detail. They were also given a brief about the activities of the FOSSEE Project of IIT Bombay.

  • OpenFOAM Beginners' Workshop conducted online in September 2020

131 engineers were trained by CFD, FOSSEE, IIT Bombay. The workshop was conducted in a unique manner by breaking out into various classrooms. Each classroom session was conducted by 2 TAs who used OpenFOAM 7 Spoken Tutorial series to conduct the workshop. Prof. Janani Srree Murallidharan introduced the participants to the basics of CFD and OpenFOAM and also helped them understand the underlying physics behind each problem.

The workshop helped the participants to switch from Windows to Linux OS, and from a commercial CFD software to OpenFOAM. They learned the basics of OpenFOAM and committed to using opensource software in their research projects.

  • Advanced Workshop on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM conducted online in September 2020

CFD-FOSSEE team successfully conducted one of the first online Advanced Workshops on Multiphase Flows using OpenFOAM. It was actually a 1-week workshop where the participants had to work on a screening task for 5 days, and once selected, they participated in the interactive session with other participants. They were introduced to the VoF (Volume of Fluids) method and Eulerian methods in a demonstration and hands-on session conducted by the CFD team.

Faculty from IIT Bombay's Mechanical Engineering Department and Department of Energy Science and Engineering gave the theory behind the methods in their lectures and interacted with the participants. During the workshop, the participants presented their work from the screening task and later shared their experience and how immensely helpful the workshop was. Towards the end of the workshop, the participants also interacted with an industry professional and learned the applications of OpenFOAM in the real world.

It was truly a successful workshop encompassing all the gamuts of Multiphase Flow in OpenFOAM.

  • Half-day event on OpenFOAM at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT), Sathyamangalam Dec 2019

CFD FOSSEE team at IIT Bombay organized a half-day event on CFD and OpenFOAM, an open source toolbox, used in academia and industry to solve continuum mechanics problems, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This half day event was held at Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT), Sathyamangalam, on December 12, 2019, and was attended by about 80 students from the Sathyamangalam and Coimbatore area. Prof. Janani Srree Murallidharan introduced the students to the basics of CFD, and also mapped it to OpenFOAM and its use as a continuum mechanics and computational fluid dynamics tool.

  • One-day workshops on OpenFOAM

The CFD group at FOSSEE, IIT Bombay aims to promote the use of free/libre and open source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM (Free/Libre and Open source Field Operation and Manipulation), which is a replacement for commercial packages like Fluent and Star CCM. We have conducted one-day workshops that are useful to both new users and existing users wishing to broaden their basic knowledge of OpenFOAM. We have conducted workshops at:

    1. Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Institute of Engineering and Technology, Nanded, Maharashtra
    2. Symbiosis Institute of Information technology, Pune
    3. VJTI, Mumbai
    4. IIT Bombay, Mumbai
